Introduction

Starting in the gym can be overwhelming. In my journey of fitness progress, I learned key beginner gym tips that helped me avoid common workout mistakes. Everybody around me, both online and in real life, suggested I should start lifting.

This comes from my background as a basketball player, which didn’t last long and left me with two bad knees. Because of this, there weren’t many options left for me. So, I joined a gym one day without any knowledge like many others. How to start in the gym wasn’t something anyone had explained to me. I had to create my own schedule, workout routine, and figure out proper form, which is a key factor in getting the most out of your training sessions .

This is a good website to understand proper form

But I had one clear goal in mind: to drop from 110 kg to 90 kg before next summer.

First 6 Months

In the first 6 months, I felt like a baby trying to walk for the first time but doing it backwards. I created a beginner workout routine with exercises I thought were effective. I saw progress, but it wasn’t what I had hoped for, so I went back to the drawing board.

The first thing I focused on was my exercise form. For example, with the dumbbell chest press I thought I was targeting my chest, but it didn’t grow. So, I turned to YouTube, TikTok, fitness blogs, and Instagram. That’s when I realized my form wasn’t correct. Learning proper form is one of the most important tips for beginners.

The next step was observing the experienced lifters at my gym and approaching them. Saying something like, “Hey, why are you doing this exercise that way?” sounds scarier than it is. These guys may look huge now, but they’ve all been beginners too. Most of them were happy to help, and some even offered coaching tips.

Besides improving my workouts, this also helped me mentally. It showed me that those big, intimidating lifters aren’t as scary as they seem  most are genuinely friendly. This transformed the gym into more than a place to work out; it became a place to connect.

And just when I thought I knew everything about lifting, I realized I had overlooked the most important step in the journey: nutrition for beginners.

Conclusion

These first 6 months taught me that progress in the gym is not just about lifting weights it’s about proper form, consistency, asking for help, and fueling your body with the right nutrition.

In my next blog, I’ll share the nutrition mistakes I made as a beginner, including meal plans and strategies that helped me finally see real results. If you want to succeed in your fitness journey, don’t miss it.
